All NJROTC cadets are issued uniforms and related items on loan from the U.S. Navy.

These items remain government property and must be properly cared for, maintained, and returned upon withdrawal from the program.

Typical issued items include:

• Service Dress Blue uniform for selected group of cadets (jacket, trousers, shirt, neckerchief/tie)

• Khaki Service uniform (shirt, trousers, belt & buckle, white t-shirt, Black shoes, socks, and cover (cap)

• PT (Physical Training) uniform (shorts, shirt)

• Ribbons, ranks, NJROTC collar device and name tags

Cadets are responsible for ensuring all items are kept in good condition and returned clean and serviceable.

Parents play an important role in helping cadets maintain their uniforms.
Proper care ensures cadets always look professional and inspection-ready.

Tips for Uniform Care:

• Hang uniforms neatly on sturdy hangers to prevent wrinkles.

• Dry clean or press as necessary, following garment care labels.

• Polish brass, shoes, and belt buckles regularly.

• Machine wash khaki and PT uniforms frequently to maintain cleanliness and color.

• Ensure ribbons, insignia, and name tags are attached properly and securely.

Uniform inspections are typically held weekly and are part of the cadet’s grade.
Instructors evaluate appearance, grooming, and proper uniform setup.
Cadets are encouraged to prepare uniforms the night before inspection to avoid rushing.

Parent Tip:
Regularly remind your cadet to check for missing buttons, tarnished brass, or misaligned ribbons before inspection day.

If a cadet loses or damages any uniform piece, it should be reported to the Naval Science Instructor (NSI) immediately.

• Replacement costs may apply for lost or intentionally damaged items.

• Damaged items due to normal wear will be replaced without charge, depending on condition and availability.

Cadets and parents should not attempt to purchase replacement uniform items from outside sources unless directed by the instructors.

Some items may not be issued and should be provided by the cadet or family:

• Extra White undershirts for khaki or dress uniforms

• Extra Black socks

• Hair accessories matching hair color for proper grooming

• Shoe polish and cleaning supplies

• Notebook or binder for NJROTC coursework

Optional items such as unit t-shirts, hoodies may be available for temporary use depending on weather conditions during the year for team events that must be returned cleaned within 5 business days. 

When leaving the program, cadets must:

• Return all issued items clean, pressed, and on hangers.

• Ensure all insignia, buttons, and accessories are intact.

• Check in with instructors to verify all property is accounted for.

Failure to return issued items may result in a financial obligation to the school.
